Agents Set Up Thailand- Focused Medical Travel Division

Two travel agents have parlayed their contacts in Thailand’s medical and travel industries into a U.S.-based medical tourism division that specializes in sending health travelers to Thailand.

International Travel Services, based in Lihue, Kaua'i, established Thailand Medical Travel and Tourism (TMTT) in 2008 as a division of the travel agency. It is co-owned by Kiki Bright and Cherie Bright, who delivered a presentation on medical tourism at ASTA’s annual trade show and conference earlier this year.

That’s the advice of Hawaii veterinarian Joanne Woltmon, DVM. Woltmon recently traveled to Thailand for eyelid surgery and a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).

Thai Tourism Launches Web-Based Med Travel Promo

Facing increased competition from Asian neighbors, including Korea and the Philippines, the Tourism Authority of Thailand is stepping up its promotion of medical travel, which reportedly generates $2 billion in annual revenue for the country’s tourism industry.

The promotion includes a three-part campaign: a medical tourism blogger contest, already underway; a “Healthy Beauty Holiday in Thailand” promotion launched this month; and a “You Are in Good Hands” campaign for December that emphasizes the credibility and safety of the medical services offered in Thailand.

At the Medical Tourism Conference in Los Angeles this week, business looked more like Skagway during the Klondike than a tradeshow at the Hyatt Century Plaza. Medical Tourism may be the new gold rush. It’s an emerging industry with roles for a variety of players in scenarios yet to be defined.

Hospitals, CVBs and destination management companies, and even airlines were in attendance with doctors, lawyers, insurance brokers and, yes, travel agents in a three-day conference that attracted interested parties from around the globe.
